Gen Z Teachers Entering Classroom Amid Challenges, Bringing New Perspectives
Applications to Teach For America have increased by about 43% over the past three years, signaling a notable entry of Gen Z individuals into the teaching profession despite ongoing concerns about pay and working conditions.
Many of these new educators seek purpose and meaningful human connection in their careers, a drive that has been heightened by experiences during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Notable examples include Curatolo from New York City and Van De Vijver from Fairfax, Virginia, who shifted from careers in architecture and film to teaching after engaging in mentoring roles and reflecting on the pandemic's impact.
Gen Z teachers are bringing fresh approaches to education, emphasizing technology integration and social-emotional learning. Their lived experiences help them relate closely to their students, fostering stronger connections. Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, notes that these new teachers are reimagining instruction by prioritizing social and emotional learning. Samuel Ramey from Cincinnati highlights the emphasis on critical thinking, media literacy, and current-events analysis within their lessons.
However, challenges persist. Gabriella Sheffler from San Diego reports that burnout and safety concerns remain significant issues. According to RAND Corporation data, approximately 53% of teachers report burnout, and 16% express intentions to resign due to wellbeing and compensation concerns. The Century Foundation estimates that US schools are underfunded by about $150 billion annually.
Despite these challenges, Gen Z educators choose the classroom to make a difference. To attract and retain these teachers, it is essential that their salaries reflect their value, alongside ensuring they receive respect and professional support within a supportive work environment that promotes work-life balance.
