Germany's Far-Right AfD Invited Back to Munich Security Conference 2026 Amid Controversy
The Munich Security Conference (MSC) has invited MPs from the far-right German party AfD to participate in its 2026 main conference after excluding the party for the past two years. This decision comes following criticism from US Vice-President JD Vance, who condemned AfD's exclusion in a speech at this year's MSC. The conference maintains that invitations are extended to MPs from all parties represented in the Bundestag, particularly those serving on foreign affairs and defence committees, a policy that existed prior to 2024. Around ten AfD MPs serve on the foreign affairs committee and approximately nine on the defence committee.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, who met JD Vance shortly before Germany's general election, stated that she has not yet received an invitation for the 2026 MSC, noting that the guest list remains incomplete. MSC leadership has undergone a change, with Jens Stoltenberg recognized as the new MSC leader as he concludes his role as Norwegian finance minister, while Wolfgang Ischinger continues as chair.
The invitation to AfD has raised concerns among some German politicians, who warn of potential security risks due to the party's alleged ties to Russia and China, as well as fears that engagement could normalize the far-right party. Analysts debate the rationale behind this policy reversal, with some worried it might undermine the 'firewall' against AfD's influence, although it is noted that MSC also extends invitations to large delegations from China. Germany's domestic intelligence service classified AfD as a 'confirmed rightwing extremist' group in May, a designation still under review. Despite controversies, the party remains a significant political force in upcoming regional elections.
