Brooks Koepka left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf in 2022 and has since played more than three seasons with LIV, winning five LIV events as well as the 2023 PGA Championship. Golf pundit Brandel Chamblee has stated that Koepka should face a penalty if he rejoins the PGA Tour, in order to preserve meritocracy and signal consequences for players who joined LIV Golf.

Chamblee proposed penalties such as requiring Koepka to re-qualify for the PGA Tour, limiting his eligibility for a season, or suspending him in connection with his prior breach of tour policies. While Koepka's five-year major exemption might remain valid for majors, it would not necessarily apply for PGA Tour status.

Chamblee criticized LIV Golf for fracturing competitive fields, diluting the meaning of competition, triggering legal disputes, destabilizing sponsorships, and forcing structural changes within professional golf. He noted that Koepka, as a marquee player, acts as a legitimizer of LIV.

According to Chamblee, any penalty would be about enforcing consequences and protecting the PGA Tour's integrity rather than punishing Koepka personally.

LIV Golf explained that Koepka left the circuit to prioritize his family and remain closer to home.
