Green Party Membership Surges Under Zack Polanski's Leadership Amid Broadening Political Agenda
Zack Polanski was elected leader of the Green Party in September, a period during which the party's membership doubled from about 70,000 to over 140,000, surpassing both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives. This growth reflects increased support for the Greens across the country, with polling showing about 17% backing and four Green MPs currently sitting in the Commons.
The four MPs—Siân Berry, Carla Denyer, Adrian Ramsay, and Ellie Chowns—each shadow six government departments, allowing the party to address a broad range of issues. Siân Berry's portfolio notably includes crime and policing, justice, transport, work and pensions, culture, media and sport, and democratic standards.
The Green MPs aim to represent voters nationwide, building on the foundation laid by Caroline Lucas, the Greens’ lone MP for 14 years who remains a prominent figure in Brighton. Under Polanski's leadership, the party's strategy has expanded beyond environmental concerns to include austerity, workers’ rights, and wealth taxes, aiming to broaden its appeal.
The party sees Reform UK as a threat and emphasizes community-building and hope to counter pressures from big business and housing developers that influence Labour and its policies. Climate action continues to be a top priority, with the Greens concerned about a potential two-degree warming scenario and the urgent need for measures to protect ecosystems.
Members of the Green Party note that Labour MPs sometimes envy the Greens' freedom to speak openly, while Liberal Democrat influence appears weaker. Cross-party collaboration remains crucial for addressing climate and nature issues effectively.
