Halima Begum launches constructive dismissal claim against Oxfam GB
Halima Begum, the former chief executive of Oxfam GB, is initiating legal action against the charity, claiming constructive dismissal. The claim arises from alleged hostile, victimising, and discriminatory conduct by Oxfam. Begum argues that she was forced to resign following an independent review which found serious concerns regarding her behaviour and decision-making.
Oxfam's trustees stated that Begum's position had become untenable due to an irretrievable breakdown in trust and confidence in her ability to lead. Begum had led Oxfam GB for nearly two years prior to her departure.
Begum's solicitors allege that she was subjected to a victimising witch-hunt and indicated that she had whistleblown to the Charity Commission about matters of public interest that are now under investigation. Legal proceedings will be pursued at the Employment Tribunal for constructive dismissal.
Approximately 70 staff members signed a letter calling for an investigation into Begum's conduct, and several employees resigned following disputes with her.
