Hollywood’s Evolving Relationship with Cryptocurrency Films
Netflix announced the production of a crypto-themed romantic comedy titled One Attempt Remaining, set to release in December 2025.
Historically, cryptocurrency has been portrayed negatively or linked to criminal activity in films and franchises such as Crypto (2019), Money Plane (2020), Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, The Quiet Maid (2023), and The Beekeeper (2024).
An indie film called Cold Wallet, backed by Decentralized Pictures (DCP), uniquely integrates crypto as both a payment method and a narrative device. The plot revolves around a crypto CEO confronting rug-pulled bagholders and includes simplified explanations of wallets and seed phrases.
Director Cutter Hoderine and DCP CEO Leo Matchett note that crypto depictions remain on the fringe of mainstream media due to limited use cases and public understanding.
Short film Límite utilized the Monero symbol symbolically following a community-on-chain proposal, although Cold Wallet did not receive crypto product placement funding.
Product placement for crypto faces challenges from the mismatch of market cycles and lengthy film development timelines, resulting in sponsors potentially disappearing by the time of release.
Some creators advocate for more nuanced portrayals of cryptocurrency, with One Attempt Remaining reportedly integrating wallet mechanics and Crypto Castle's Viviane Ford aiming to develop more likable and grounded crypto characters.
Experts anticipate cryptocurrency will become a major part of the global economy in coming decades and could centralize future heist and adventure films.
