Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss, Anne Frank’s stepsister, dies aged 96
Eva Schloss, a Holocaust survivor and Anne Frank’s stepsister, has died aged 96, with her death announced in January 2026. Schloss co-founded and served as the honorary president of the Anne Frank Trust, where Queen Camilla is the patron.
King Charles paid tribute to Schloss, expressing that he and the queen admired her deeply. He recalled dancing with Schloss in 2022 at a Jewish community centre in north London. The Jewish News confirmed her death, and the Schloss family conveyed their great sadness, describing the loss of "our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother."
Born Eva Geiringer in Vienna, Schloss later lived in Amsterdam. Her family moved to evade Nazi capture but was betrayed by a Nazi sympathiser. In May 1944, on the journey to Auschwitz, Schloss and her mother were separated from her father Erich and brother Heinz; Erich and Heinz had hidden 30 individuals. The journey to Auschwitz took three days and was marked by severe hardships and separation.
In 1952, Schloss married Zvi Schloss and had three daughters: Jacky, Caroline, and Sylvia. She moved to England, living in London for over 70 years, and became a British citizen in 2021 when she was 92.
In 2017, the Jewish Museum in London hosted an exhibition focussed on Schloss and her sister. Dan Green, chief executive of the Anne Frank Trust, described Schloss as a beacon of hope and resilience. He noted that her work in Holocaust education left a lasting impact, guiding future generations towards building a world free from hatred.
