Ian Rush, Liverpool FC ambassador and the club's all-time top men's scorer, was admitted to the Countess of Chester Hospital last week due to breathing difficulties caused by the flu and spent two days in intensive care. He remains in hospital as he recovers.

Rush, 64, signed for Liverpool in 1980 for £300,000 and scored 346 goals in 660 appearances across two spells, including a loan to Juventus during the 1987-88 season. During his time at Liverpool, he won five First Division titles and two European Cups.

After leaving Liverpool, Rush played for Leeds United in 1996 and also featured for Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Wrexham, and Sydney Olympic. He earned 73 caps for Wales, scoring 28 goals, a national record until Gareth Bale surpassed it in 2018. His first Wales cap was earned before joining Liverpool in 1980.

Following his playing career, Rush managed Chester for eight months and was awarded an MBE in 1996. He continues to attend matches at Anfield as a club ambassador.

Liverpool FC issued a statement wishing Rush a speedy recovery and expressing thanks to the hospital for providing the best possible care. NHS data indicates that flu cases in England are at a record level for this time of year, with a 55% rise in a week to about 2,660 hospital patients per day.
