Identifications and Investigations Continue After Crans-Montana New Year’s Eve Bar Fire
As of January 4, 2026, 24 of the 40 people killed in the Crans-Montana New Year’s Eve bar fire have been identified. Among the victims, the youngest is a 14-year-old Swiss girl, with two 15-year-old Swiss girls and ten others aged between 16 and 18 also confirmed dead. Identified victims include 10 Swiss nationals, 2 Italians, 1 person with Italian-Emirati citizenship, 1 Romanian, 1 French, and 1 Turkish national. The mother of 16-year-old Arthur Brodard has confirmed his death. Authorities have not yet released the names publicly as they are in the process of notifying relatives.
The fire is suspected to have started when sparklers or candles were held too close to the ceiling in the basement of the bar. Two bar managers are currently under criminal investigation for homicide by negligence, involuntary bodily harm, and involuntarily causing the fire. Investigators are examining whether the ceiling's sound-dampening material complied with safety regulations and whether the use of candles was permitted. They are also reviewing the venue’s safety measures, including fire extinguishers and escape routes.
There were 119 people injured, many suffering severe burns, and are receiving treatment in burns units across Europe. Due to the burn damage, identification of the bodies has been conducted using DNA and dental records.
A national day of mourning has been planned in Switzerland with church bells ringing and a minute of silence. A silent procession and a mass were held in Crans-Montana at Chapelle St-Christophe, alongside a makeshift memorial near the Le Constellation bar. Condolences have been expressed by the pope and Swiss President Guy Parmelin.
