Idris Elba and Torvill and Dean among New Year Honours recipients
Idris Elba has been knighted for his services to young people through the Elba Hope Foundation. Meera Syal was made a dame for her contributions to literature, drama, and charity. Ice skating legends Torvill and Dean received a dame and a knight honour respectively, recognising their contributions to ice skating and voluntary service.
Amanda Pritchard was made a dame for her services to the NHS. Other individuals honoured with knighthoods include Patrick McCabe, a UN official known for clearing unexploded bombs in Gaza; Tristram Hunt for services to museums; and Roy Clarke, creator of notable TV shows such as Last of the Summer Wine, Open All Hours, and Keeping Up Appearances.
Several England women's football team members were recognised: Sarina Wiegman as an honorary dame; Leah Williamson with a CBE; and Alex Greenwood, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway, and Ella Toone awarded MBEs. In women's rugby, Marlie Packer and Zoe Aldcroft received OBEs; Ellie Kildunne, Sadia Kabeya, and Megan Jones were awarded MBEs; and coach John Mitchell received an OBE.
Other notable honours include Paula Radcliffe with an OBE; Betty Brown with an OBE for fighting for justice for post office operators; Mervyn Kersh with a BEM for Holocaust remembrance and education; John Hearn with a BEM for services to judo and the community; and Toby Roberts was recognised with an MBE as the youngest recipient at 20 years old.
Additional honours were awarded to Ekow Eshun and Dan Cruickshank (OBEs); Daniel Levy and Max Richter (CBEs); and Bill Bailey, Andrew McMillan, Cynthia Erivo, and Marcus Wareing (MBEs).
