Israel Becomes First Country to Recognize Somaliland as Independent Nation
On December 26, Israel formally recognized Somaliland as an independent nation. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Netanyahu alongside Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Somaliland’s president, Abdullahi. A mutual declaration was signed in the spirit of the Abraham Accords, including the establishment of full diplomatic relations with ambassadors exchanged.
Somaliland’s president Abdullahi welcomed the move, stating it reinforces Somaliland’s international legitimacy and sovereignty. Somaliland’s Foreign Affairs Ministry described the recognition as a constructive contribution to peace, stability, and cooperation in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. Somaliland also intends to join the Abraham Accords.
South Sudan was reported to be the second country to recognize Somaliland, raising questions about whether the United States will follow with similar recognition. Former President Donald Trump was reportedly considering recognizing Somaliland but publicly indicated he was not ready to embrace it, stating he needed to study Netanyahu’s pitch and asking if anyone knew what Somaliland is.
A potential U.S. recognition could provide Washington with a strategic foothold in the Horn of Africa, including a possible air and sea base near Berbera Port at the entrance to the Red Sea amid regional security considerations.
Netanyahu invited Somaliland’s President Abdullahi to Israel and praised his leadership in the recognition process. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991.
