Jason Collins Diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma Brain Cancer
Jason Collins, 47, former NBA player and the first openly gay man to play in a major US pro sports league, has been diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. He indicated that the illness, one of the deadliest brain cancers, could leave him with about a year to live, though it may also take his life within weeks. Symptoms began with memory loss and difficulty focusing, with a notable deterioration accelerating in August. Initial treatment included medication, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Collins is currently pursuing innovative immunotherapy treatment at a clinic in Singapore, which is still under study. He receives support from his husband, Brunson Green, as well as other family and friends, and has likened his fight against the disease to the resolve he showed when coming out as gay. His condition and treatment were publicly disclosed in September, with a detailed ESPN interview published on December 12, 2025.
