Jeffrey Epstein's Involvement in Cryptocurrency Policy and Discussions with Steve Bannon
In early 2018, Jeffrey Epstein pressed Steve Bannon to obtain clarity from the U.S. Treasury regarding cryptocurrency policy, questioning whether the Treasury would respond or if another channel should be pursued. Bannon informed Epstein that the issue was being considered by the National Security Council rather than the Treasury. Epstein noted that a Treasury office focused on terrorism finance had contemplated tax issues related to cryptocurrency.
Epstein advocated for a voluntary disclosure form for realized cryptocurrency gains aimed at addressing illicit activity. He described crypto concerns as US-based, primarily related to tax, regulation, and disclosure issues, referring to them as "cryptocoin issues." Epstein also warned about the global impact of cryptocurrency policy, using phrases like "Some bad shit. Very bad," and emphasized the need for coordinated action.
In 2019, a Wall Street Journal report cited a source indicating that Epstein claimed to work for the U.S. Treasury on cryptocurrency and anti-hacking efforts. Earlier, in June 2019, Epstein criticized Libra, describing it as not a currency and potentially destabilizing to the financial system if misused, though it remains unclear if his remarks were specifically about Libra or stablecoins in general.
Emails released by Congress revealed that before March 2015, Epstein met with Brock Pierce of Tether at his Manhattan townhouse. In September 2018, Epstein suggested treating cryptocurrency like the internet, advocating for international agreements and coordinated understandings to regulate the space.
