Jes Staley and Larry Summers Named Executors of Jeffrey Epstein's Will in Earlier Filings
Newly released Department of Justice filings have revealed versions of Jeffrey Epstein's will that named Jes Staley and Larry Summers as executors at different times prior to Epstein's death. Jes Staley, former Barclays CEO, was initially named successor executor in 2012 and later as full executor between 2013 and 2014. Larry Summers, former US Treasury secretary, was named successor executor in 2014. However, the final will from 2019 did not include either man as executors.
Jeffrey Epstein died in August 2019 in prison while awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges. Following these revelations, scrutiny has increased over Staley and Summers' connections to Epstein. Jes Staley was banned from the UK banking sector after downplaying his relationship with Epstein. Tribunal transcripts indicate Staley declined to act as trustee and refused to be executor of Epstein's estate. The Financial Conduct Authority concluded that Staley's relationship with Epstein was close and extended beyond a professional association. Staley stepped down as Barclays CEO in 2021 and was formally banned from the UK financial sector in 2023.
Larry Summers reportedly remained in contact with Epstein into 2019, ending shortly before Epstein’s arrest in July 2019. Summers' spokesman stated he was unaware of being included in an early version of Epstein's will and denied involvement in Epstein's finances or estate. In November, Summers stepped down from a teaching role at Harvard following earlier reports about his continued contact with Epstein that year.
The Guardian notes that these newly released filings raise significant questions about the closeness of Jes Staley and Larry Summers to Jeffrey Epstein and their potential roles in managing his estate prior to his death.
