Jets Reinstates Fan in $100,000 Halftime Field-Goal Contest After Eligibility Reversal
The New York Jets have reversed a previous disqualification and reinstated fan Ashley Castanio-Gervasi to participate in the $100,000 halftime field-goal contest against the New England Patriots.
The eligibility issue arose from rules prohibiting current or recent coaches in soccer, football, or rugby for insurance reasons. Castanio-Gervasi, who disclosed her coaching role and college soccer background during the qualification process, was unaware of the issue until days before the contest.
She earned entry by successfully kicking a 20-yard field goal at a Jets tailgate event in October and was initially identified by team staff after attempting kicks at a September home game.
Public backlash from figures such as Damien Woody and Eric Swalwell, along with social media criticism, led the Jets to reconsider and ultimately reverse the decision.
The Jets stated there had been an unfortunate misunderstanding about her eligibility and confirmed she will be allowed to kick during halftime on Sunday for a chance to win the prize.
The $100,000 prize, sponsored by Hellmann’s, is intended by Castanio-Gervasi to help her buy a home and support cancer charities, including in memory of her father Frank, who passed away from esophageal cancer in 2011.
Before the reversal, Castanio-Gervasi had planned to skip the game, while the Jets had offered alternatives such as team merchandise and a gift card.
Details about the final kick's distance have not been announced. Castanio-Gervasi is recovering from knee surgery on her non-kicking leg but plans to participate as scheduled.
The contest finals will take place at halftime of Sunday’s home game. The Jets currently hold a 3-12 record, last in the AFC East.
