Joe Thomas Urges Browns to Build Around Shedeur Sanders as Franchise Quarterback
Joe Thomas has expressed confidence in Shedeur Sanders as the Cleveland Browns' potential franchise quarterback. He suggests the team should use two first-round draft picks, including their No. 4 overall selection, to build a strong team around Sanders and keep him as the starter through the offseason and into training camp.
Sanders became the Browns' starting quarterback following Dillon Gabriel's concussion and subsequent quarterback moves involving the trades of Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco. Sanders won his first NFL start and has maintained the starting role since then.
In the 2025 season, Sanders has recorded five touchdowns and six interceptions. Notably, he threw three touchdowns in a victory over the Tennessee Titans and three interceptions in a 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Thomas emphasized that Sanders must operate within the offense without being overly restricted. He highlighted the importance of trust among Sanders, his coach, the offensive coordinator, and the rest of the team for the quarterback's development.
The Browns face challenges including a struggling target in Jerry Jeudy and a depleted offensive line, factors Thomas says need to be addressed to aid Sanders' progression. Additionally, the first-round picks could be used to acquire the top draft spot to select Heisman Trophy candidate Fernando Mendoza, according to Thomas.
