Kyle Whittingham Named Michigan Head Coach Following Sherrone Moore Controversy
Kyle Whittingham has been named Michigan's next head football coach, signing a five-year contract as reported by ESPN. He will replace Sherrone Moore, who was fired earlier in December 2025 due to an inappropriate relationship with a staffer and was subsequently arrested.
Following Moore's dismissal, Biff Poggi served as the interim head coach before Whittingham's arrival. Whittingham, aged 66, had announced earlier in 2025 that he would step down as Utah's head coach after 20 seasons with the program, dating back to 1994.
Whittingham becomes Michigan's fifth head coach since Lloyd Carr retired after the 2007 season. Michigan is set to play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, 2025.
The Michigan football program recently won the 2023 national championship under J.J. McCarthy, finishing 15-0 with their first undefeated season since 1997. However, the program has faced several scandals in recent years, including a sign-stealing scandal and the suspension of former coach Jim Harbaugh. Moore himself was suspended amid an NCAA investigation before his firing.
ESPN's report of Whittingham's five-year contract on Friday indicates a swift hiring process following Moore's departure.
