Liz Truss Launches Exclusive Mayfair Club Amid Tory Rivalry
Liz Truss is set to open Leconfield, a new exclusive members' club located in Leconfield House, Mayfair, offering "founding memberships" priced at £500,000. The club aims to position itself as a "strategic nexus for a global network of pro-growth leaders" and a "secure ecosystem" for technology, policy, and capital, with the site referring to Truss as the "56th prime minister" of the UK.
The venue is being developed by Robert Tchenguiz on Curzon Street, where offices at Leconfield House are currently being transformed for this venture. Leconfield is situated opposite a William Hill shop.
The club enters a competitive scene dominated nearby by 5 Hertford Street (5H), a longstanding Tory libertarian hub located just two minutes away. 5H, owned by Robin Birley, has an annual membership fee under £2,000 and has hosted notable Conservative figures such as Boris Johnson, Zac Goldsmith, Priti Patel, and Liz Truss herself. Despite its smaller membership fee, 5H remains a popular elite venue among Conservative circles.
Insiders at 5H have expressed irritation over Truss's active recruitment efforts of members, describing the approach as "rather rude." However, they do not anticipate that Leconfield will significantly impact their business, noting the value offered by 5H continues to uphold its appeal.
Prior to its current incarnation, Leconfield House was subject to plans in 2022 to become a 70-bedroom hotel with a spa, which were blocked by planners. Last year, there were also plans to convert the building into high-end flats priced at £7,500 per square foot.
