Louis Rees-Zammit's NFL Experience Enhances His Rugby Performance at Bristol
Louis Rees-Zammit's spell in the NFL has significantly improved his rugby performance, according to Bristol head coach Pat Lam. Rees-Zammit joined the NFL pathway in January 2024, spending time with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Jacksonville Jaguars. After 18 months without playing NFL, he returned to rugby with Bristol in July 2025.
At Bristol, Rees-Zammit has transitioned to playing full-back (No 15), a position Lam believes suits him best. This move has been successful; he scored two tries in Bristol's win over Newcastle Red Bulls at Ashton Gate last Saturday. Lam notes that Rees-Zammit's increased power, speed, and footwork, developed during his NFL tenure, have made him stronger and more rounded as a player. His powerful kick and ability to chip-and-chase add to his effectiveness at full-back, although he can also cover the wing position. Previously, Rees-Zammit played on the wing for Wales and Gloucester.
Bristol is currently in good form, having won their last five Premiership matches and are set to host Sale Sharks in an upcoming league match. Sale Sharks director Alex Sanderson highlighted the need for teams to prepare defensively against Rees-Zammit, noting his strong left boot and creativity, and advising defenders to monitor space when he opts to kick long.
Rees-Zammit's development has been supported by his experience with Wales and additional training during national camps, contributing to his refined skills and adaptability on the field.
