Magnus Carlsen Clinches 19th and 20th World Speed Chess Titles in Doha
Magnus Carlsen secured his 19th and 20th world speed chess titles by winning both the World Rapid and World Blitz Championships held in Doha, Qatar. Despite facing several mishaps during the competitions, including crucial time forfeits after misplacing pieces and a notable rook-for-bishop blunder in the Rapid event, Carlsen maintained his composure to claim victory. Additionally, he caused a minor stir by leaving the venue momentarily and swatting a photographer's camera.
In the World Rapid Championship, Carlsen finished first with a score of 10.5 out of 13 points, earning the top prize of €70,000. Artemiev secured the silver medal, while Erigaisi took bronze.
The World Blitz Championship followed a format of 19 rounds with a time control of three minutes plus two seconds per move. Carlsen experienced challenges, including blundering a rook against Fabiano Caruana and losing on time to Erigaisi after fumbling a piece. Near elimination after round 14, he advanced to the knockout stage where he defeated Abdusattorov 2.5-1.5 in the final to claim the title.
