Man Dies Attempting Rescue in Treacherous Sea Conditions at Withernsea
Mark Ratcliffe, 67, died after being pulled from the sea at Withernsea, East Yorkshire, on Friday afternoon while attempting to help two people in difficulty. Emergency services were called to Central Promenade at 3:15pm. He died at the scene.
One of the victims, a 45-year-old woman, was recovered, while the search for a third person was stood down on Saturday afternoon by the coastguard. Witnesses reported people rushing in to rescue a young woman who had fallen into the treacherous sea conditions.
Ratcliffe's family described him as a selfless hero and as a loving husband, father, son, brother, and grandfather. Police stated that specialist officers will support the family, and residents will see an increased police presence while the search for the remaining person continued.
