Manchester Museum's Africa Hub houses more than 40,000 items from across Africa, many acquired during the British empire era through trade, looting, or preservation. The collection features a wide range of objects including animals, cultural heritage items, minerals, and plants. However, many records only note donors or collections, with limited information about the original makers or owners.

The hub is located on Oxford Road in Manchester's university district, and its collections are accessible both in person and online. The initiative encourages visitors worldwide to contribute information regarding objects’ provenance to address gaps in records and to help shape curatorial understanding.

A key aim is to work towards restitution where appropriate and to build new partnerships with communities within the African diaspora. Collaboration is already underway with the Manchester Igbo Community (ICM), who contributed to a central display. Lucy Edematie, curator for African collections from colonial contexts, and Sylvia Mgbeahurike, ICM Women’s vice-chair, are actively involved in research and outreach efforts.

Described as an evolving space for reflection, dialogue, and shared learning, the Africa Hub’s future direction will be shaped by public contributions, emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity and deeper understanding of Africa's diverse histories.
