Mark Wiseman Named as Canada's Next Ambassador to the United States
Mark Wiseman has been named Canada's ambassador to the United States and will take office on 15 February 2026, as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney. He will replace Kirsten Hillman, who resigned earlier in December 2025.
Wiseman will be a key member of Canada's negotiating team for the scheduled 2026 review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). His mandate will focus on advancing the interests of Canadian workers, businesses, and institutions. The USMCA, originally negotiated by former US President Donald Trump, includes a clause permitting renegotiation in 2026.
Canada remains a major trading partner with the US, being the top export destination for 36 US states. Nearly CAD 3.6 billion in goods and services cross the border daily. Canada supplies approximately 60% of US crude oil imports, around 85% of US electricity imports, and is the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum, and uranium.
Mark Wiseman's professional background includes leading the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board fund and managing equity funds at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, as well as chairing the Alberta Investment Management Corporation. From 2016 to 2019, he served as senior managing director and global head of active equities at BlackRock, a tenure that ended after failing to disclose a consensual relationship. He had been described as a potential successor at BlackRock.
Wiseman is known to be a friend of Prime Minister Carney, who previously led the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.
