Marmite-Scented Deodorant Tops List of UK's Most Unwanted Christmas Presents
A poll conducted by Which? in January among 2,000 UK adults revealed that 21% received an unwanted or unsuitable present last Christmas. The most unwanted gift was a limited edition Marmite-scented deodorant by Unilever. Other notably disappointing presents included toiletries with rotten coconut and pineapple fragrances and a Tottenham Hotspur book. An example of a particularly unsuitable gift was a helicopter ride given to a person who suffers from vertigo by their daughter.
Following Christmas, recipients took various actions regarding these unwanted gifts: 33% kept and would use the item; 15% kept but would not use it; 34% disposed of it; 12% passed it to a friend or family member; 10% donated it to charity shops; 8% sold it online; 2% threw it away; and 1% returned the gift to the purchaser.
Which? emphasises the importance of gift receipts and retailer return policies. Many retailers extend return periods during the festive season and may permit refunds or exchanges if the item is marked as a gift. Generally, proof of purchase is required for returns, and some retailers restrict refunds to the original payment method unless the original cardholder is present. In some cases, refunds may be issued as gift cards or credit notes, depending on store policy. These policies vary among retailers, and gift receipts can assist recipients in accessing returns or exchanges when necessary.
