Mass Shooting Targets Hanukkah Celebration on Bondi Beach, Sydney
On December 14, 2025, a mass shooting occurred at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulting in 12 people killed and about 30 injured. The attack, beginning around 6:45 p.m. local time, was directed at the Jewish community and is considered the deadliest assault on Jews since Hamas's attacks on October 7, 2023. New South Wales Police responded to reports of shots fired and confirmed that two gunmen were involved, with a possible third suspect. One attacker was killed at the scene, while the second remains in critical condition. The ongoing investigation is being treated as a terrorism case.
In response to the tragedy, Australian NBA champion Andrew Bogut, born in Melbourne and known for his 14-season career with teams including the Bucks, Warriors, Mavericks, Cavaliers, and Lakers, publicly called on officials to impose the death penalty by hanging for the surviving gunman if they recovered. Bogut also alleged that there was censorship in the coverage of the attack.
