Mexican Navy Plane Crashes Near Galveston, Texas, Killing At Least Five
At least five people were killed after a Mexican Navy plane crashed near Galveston, Texas, while transporting a child burn victim. The aircraft was last recorded at 15:01 local time (21:01 GMT) over Galveston Bay near Scholes International Airport. The plane was on a medical mission for the Michou y Mau Foundation, which cares for Mexican children with severe burns. Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy said one person remains missing and two others were rescued alive.
Wreckage was seen in the water as rescuers, including a dive team and police, searched the debris. Sky Decker, a local yacht captain, assisted by taking two police officers to the site and rescuing a badly injured woman from the plane. Witnesses described the scene with jet fuel in the water and a limited air gap for the injured person. The Mexican Navy said search and rescue operations were underway in coordination with the US Coast Guard. Video near Scholes International Airport showed divers working in dense fog. The Michou y Mau Foundation issued condolences to the families of the victims.
