Miami Talks Between US, Ukraine, and Russia Show Constructive Discussions on Security and Economic Plans
After three days of Miami talks involving US envoy Steve Witkoff, Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov, and European allies, discussions were described as productive and constructive around a 20-point plan focused on a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US security guarantee for Ukraine, and an economic and prosperity plan, though no major breakthrough was achieved.
Separate talks in Miami between US and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev were also described as productive; Russia reiterated its commitment to peace in Ukraine. These diplomatic efforts follow weeks of heightened diplomacy after a leak of a 28-point US peace plan, which Ukraine and European allies viewed as favorable to Russia.
Witkoff and Umerov emphasized a shared priority to stop the killing, guarantee security, and create conditions for Ukraine's recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity. However, US intelligence sources indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin still aims to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim parts of Europe that belonged to the former Soviet empire. In a BBC interview with Steve Rosenberg, Putin stated that there will be no more wars after Ukraine if Russia is treated with respect.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged two vessels and two piers in Russia's Krasnodar region, causing a large fire and prompting evacuation of all crew, with some reports mentioning oil infrastructure targeted.
Witkoff noted that Russian representatives met with him and other US officials in southern Florida, including Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser. The ongoing Miami diplomacy is linked to Donald Trump's involvement, with Witkoff described as Trump's special envoy.
