Michigan Fires Coach Sherrone Moore Over Inappropriate Relationship and NCAA Issues
The University of Michigan has terminated head football coach Sherrone Moore for cause, citing evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member as a violation of university policy and its zero-tolerance stance. Specific details of the policy violation have not been disclosed.
Moore, who signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $5.5 million last year, will not receive a buyout for the remaining years of his contract due to the termination being for cause. His firing comes less than two years after he was promoted to head coach following Michigan's 2023 national title. Prior to becoming head coach, Moore served as Jim Harbaugh's top assistant and was the interim coach during the 2023 championship season.
Less than 24 hours after his termination, Moore was jailed at the Washtenaw County Jail. Authorities have not released information about bond or court appearances. Pittsfield Township Police stated the investigation involved an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township and affirmed there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
Michigan concluded this season with a 9-3 record overall and a 7-2 record in the Big Ten Conference. The team is scheduled to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31. Biff Poggi has been named interim head coach as Michigan searches for its third head coach in four years.
This is not Moore's first controversy; in 2023, he was suspended for two games due to NCAA recruiting and sign-stealing violations, with the NCAA later increasing the suspension to three games. Investigators recovered a deleted 52-message text thread between Moore and former staffer Connor Stalions, which was shared with the NCAA during its probe.
