Michigan Targets Kyle Whittingham as New Head Coach Following Sherrone Moore Scandal
Michigan is searching for a new head football coach to replace Sherrone Moore, who was fired amid a scandal involving an inappropriate relationship. Prosecutors allege Moore contacted the staffer after their breakup and subsequently barged into her home armed with a butter knife and scissors, threatening self-harm. Moore has pleaded not guilty, with the next court date set for January 22. Earlier reports had indicated Moore was dealing with rumors of an extramarital affair and experiencing stress during the 2025 season.
The university is now focusing on Kyle Whittingham, the longtime head coach at Utah. Whittingham, who is stepping down after Utah's bowl game on December 31, has a notable coaching record including a 177-88 career mark, a successful 10-2 season in 2025, and undefeated 13-0 campaigns in 2008. He is considered a potential College Football Hall of Fame candidate.
According to ESPN, Michigan officials are expected to discuss Whittingham's candidacy this Friday, with a deal possibly being reached shortly after. Whittingham himself joked about entering the transfer portal when announcing his step down, signaling his intent to continue coaching in some capacity.
