Minnesota Wild Acquire Quinn Hughes from Vancouver Canucks in Blockbuster Trade
The Minnesota Wild have acquired defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks in a major trade aimed at propelling the team beyond prior playoff series defeats.
The trade, announced on December 13, 2025, sees the Wild sending Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-round draft pick to Vancouver in exchange for Hughes.
Hughes, 26, who won the 2024 Norris Trophy, is signed through the 2026-27 season with an average annual value of $7.85 million. He does not have trade-blocking protection and cannot be signed to an extension until July 1.
Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin described the trade as part of building a bright future, highlighting the incoming young assets Rossi, Buium, Ohgren, and the first-round draft pick.
Hughes had served as Vancouver’s captain for three seasons and recorded 2 goals, 21 assists, and 32 blocked shots in 23 games this season. Originally drafted seventh overall in 2018 from Michigan, the Florida-born defenseman spent much of his youth in the Boston and Toronto areas. His departure aligns with Vancouver's broader rebuilding strategy following several previous trades.
The Wild's defensive corps already features captain Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin, and Brock Faber, with Jesper Wallstedt and Filip Gustavsson handling goaltending duties. Offensive leader Kirill Kaprizov remains under contract through 2034.
Since November 1, Minnesota has posted a strong 14-3-2 record and is set to face Ottawa and Boston in upcoming games. Hughes is expected to make his debut against the Boston Bruins.
On the same day, the Edmonton Oilers also made a significant move by acquiring goaltender Tristan Jarry from Pittsburgh.
