Nancy Pelosi Predicts Democrats Will Retake the House in 2026 Midterms
Nancy Pelosi has predicted that the Democratic Party will win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, as stated during an appearance on ABC News’s This Week. Pelosi emphasized that House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is prepared to become Speaker and would assume the gavel if the Democrats regain the majority.
Pelosi argued that the Republican Party has largely ceded congressional power to President Donald Trump, weakening Congress as an independent institution. She suggested that this power dynamic would be reversed once the House gavel returns to the Democrats. Pelosi, an 85-year-old congresswoman with 20 terms, plans to retire at the end of her current final term in early 2027.
She further noted the GOP coalition's alignment with President Trump's leadership has undermined the traditional independence of Congress. Pelosi's predictions come amid a challenging political climate for Republicans, which includes President Trump's lower approval ratings and higher disapproval ratings according to Gallup polls. Several prominent Republican lawmakers, such as Mitch McConnell, Thom Tillis, Joni Ernst, and Tommy Tuberville, are not seeking reelection, alongside over two dozen House Republicans.
