Nasry 'Tito' Asfura Declared Winner in Controversial Honduras Presidential Election
Nasry 'Tito' Asfura, a 67-year-old right-wing candidate and former mayor of Tegucigalpa, was declared the winner of Honduras's presidential election held on 30 November 2025.
Asfura secured 40.27% of the vote, narrowly defeating his closest rival, Nasralla, who received 39.53%, with a margin of about 28,000 votes.
The National Electoral Council proclaimed Asfura as the winner prior to completing a full review of the vote tally; this announcement came while a special scrutiny recount of ballots flagged as inconsistent was still underway.
The council's ruling was supported by two councillors aligned respectively with Asfura and Nasralla, while a third councillor affiliated with Xiomara Castro's leftist party did not endorse the result.
Asfura's presidential term is scheduled to begin on 27 January 2026 and run through 2030.
The election results were strongly contested: Nasralla rejected the outcome, alleging fraud and forgery of tally documents, and called for his supporters to remain calm.
Luis Redondo, president of the Honduran Congress and a member of the Libre party, also rejected the results, stating they were outside the law.
US involvement in the election was notable, with former President Donald Trump publicly backing Asfura before the vote and stating that the US would support the next Honduran government if Asfura won.
Additionally, Trump pardoned former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández on the eve of the election.
US official Marco Rubio congratulated Asfura following the declaration of victory.
