NBA and FIBA Collaborate on New European Professional Basketball League
The NBA is pursuing teams and ownership groups to establish a new professional men's basketball league in Europe, in partnership with FIBA. This league will feature permanent franchises alongside additional spots gained through an annual qualification pathway. Qualification routes include clubs from FIBA-affiliated domestic leagues securing places via the Basketball Champions League or an end-of-year tournament.
The league's calendar is designed to avoid conflicts with domestic and international schedules, ensuring players can meet all their commitments. Permanent franchises are expected to be highly valued, potentially exceeding $1 billion. Notably, JPMorgan and the Raine Group have reportedly engaged with around 70 potential investors.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the venture's significant opportunities in Europe and highlighted ongoing efforts to engage prospective clubs and owners who align with the league's vision. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis stated that the project supports the sustainability of European basketball and provides a fair pathway for participation, underscoring the collaboration between the NBA and FIBA.
The timeline for the league includes the submission of nonbinding ownership bids in January, followed by a vote from a board of governors to approve the league in March. Additional updates will be provided as the project progresses.
