Two firms, MiAlgae and Celtic Renewables, are planning significant job creation at the former Grangemouth refinery site to foster a new industrial future.

MiAlgae aims to create 130 direct full-time jobs over five years and support an additional 180 positions. Its facility will produce fish-free Omega-3 derived from whisky by-products.

Celtic Renewables plans to create up to 149 jobs by 2030 through a £120 million industrial biorefinery project. This facility will convert waste into acetone, butanol, and ethanol, expanding capacity to ten times the current levels.

MiAlgae has received £1.5 million in funding from both UK and Scottish governments. The UK contribution is part of a £14.5 million fund for the Grangemouth area announced by the Chancellor, complemented by Scottish Just Transition Funding.

Additionally, Scottish Enterprise is supported with £600,000 from the Scottish government to help make Grangemouth an attractive destination for investors.

Combined, the projects have the potential to create up to 460 direct and supply-chain jobs across Scotland.

These developments follow the closure in April of Scotland's only oil refinery at Grangemouth. Officials including Scottish Energy Secretary Gillian Martin and UK government official Douglas Alexander emphasized strong government backing for Grangemouth's future and its green investment opportunities.
