Newcastle United Secure Carabao Cup Semi-Final Spot with Late Win Against Fulham
Newcastle United triumphed over Fulham 2-1 at St James' Park to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-finals, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Lewis Miley.
Fulham took an early lead within 10 minutes when Yoane Wissa capitalized on a spill from Newcastle keeper Benjamin Lecomte after Jacob Murphy's cross.
Sasa Lukić leveled for Fulham with a header from an Antonee Robinson cross, bringing the score to 1-1.
An own goal was disallowed when Joachim Andersen deflected Murphy's cross into his own net due to offside.
The decisive moment came late in the match as Miley headed in from Sandro Tonali's corner.
In the closing stages, Sandro Tonali and a Germany-born centre-forward replaced Wissa and Joe Willock, while Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga were brought on in the final 10 minutes.
Newcastle will face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, with the other semi-final to be contested between Chelsea and either Arsenal or Crystal Palace. The first legs are scheduled for the week commencing 12 January, with the final at Wembley on 22 March.
Manager Eddie Howe reflected on Newcastle's previous derby defeat at Sunderland, describing it as a huge disappointment both in terms of result and performance.
