NFL Suspends Steelers Wide Receiver DK Metcalf for Two Games Following Altercation with Lions Fan
The NFL has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf for two games due to an off-field altercation with a fan during the Week 16 victory over the Detroit Lions on December 21, 2025, in Detroit. The suspension was issued for violating the league's policy that prohibits players from entering the stands or confronting fans and engaging in unnecessary physical contact that could lead to crowd-control issues or injury.
During the incident, Metcalf grabbed the fan's shirt and wig and swung at him. This interaction was captured on a CBS broadcast; however, officials did not flag Metcalf during the game, and he participated in the Steelers' 29-24 win. The fan involved, identified as Ryan Kennedy, denied using hateful language, claiming he referred to Metcalf by his government name and denied making derogatory remarks. Kennedy later issued a statement through a Michigan law firm denying accusations of hate speech.
Metcalf plans to appeal the suspension. The NFL clarified that the incident did not occur on the field but stated that a review of video footage determined Metcalf's actions warranted discipline.
The Steelers currently hold a two-game lead over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North and are scheduled to face the Cleveland Browns in Week 17 and the Ravens in Week 18. Metcalf's suspension is expected to impact the Steelers' offense during their playoff push. Head coach Mike Tomlin said he had not seen the incident and had yet to speak to Metcalf.
Before the suspension, Metcalf had recorded 551 receiving yards and five touchdowns over ten games.
