Nightclub Fire in North Goa Claims 25 Lives, Investigations Underway
A tragic fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in north Goa's Aporna district resulted in 25 deaths, most of whom were staff members trapped and suffocated in the basement. Among the victims were four members of a Delhi family — three sisters and one husband — who were on their first holiday to Goa; only one sister survived. Additionally, five Indian tourists from Delhi and Karnataka were killed.
The venue has come under scrutiny for allegedly violating multiple safety regulations. Notably, the basement lacked a fire safety exit, and the building was primarily constructed from wood and bamboo. Pyrotechnics were reportedly used during a live show at the time the fire broke out.
Early investigations are examining possible causes including the ignition of fireworks or faulty electrical short circuits. Initial assessments point to a potential short circuit in the electrical systems above the main stage, exacerbated by flammable furnishings.
Emergency response efforts were hindered by narrow access lanes and the venue's remote location, which marketed itself as an 'island venue' in inland north Goa.
The state government has established a high-level committee to investigate the incident, with a report expected within a week. Authorities have arrested and charged the general manager, owners, and event organisers.
