Nine killed in stabbing incident near Paramaribo, Suriname
Nine people were killed in a stabbing on the outskirts of Paramaribo, Suriname, with five of the dead being children. The incident took place on a Saturday night on a road leading out of the city. One adult and one child were seriously injured and were taken to hospital for treatment.
A male suspect was detained after being shot in the leg and is currently under police guard in hospital. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and plan to release further details.
Local media reports suggest the suspect may have mental health issues. Suriname's president noted that his own family and neighbours were among the victims of the attack.
Such violent incidents are relatively rare in Suriname, which has one of the world's lowest stabbing death rates. Since gaining independence in 1975, the country has experienced coups and a civil war, but this stabbing remains an unusual and tragic event.
