Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Violently Arrested in Mashhad During Memorial Ceremony
Narges Mohammadi, the 53-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner known for her activism against female oppression and human rights abuses, was violently arrested in Mashhad, Iran, according to her foundation. The arrest occurred during a memorial ceremony for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, whose death has led to calls for an independent inquiry by Iran Human Rights.
Several activists, including Mohammadi, were detained at the ceremony, where attendees reportedly shouted slogans such as "death to the dictator" and "long live Iran." Witnesses to the arrest include Taghi Rahmani, Mohammadi's husband, who described the arrest as violent, and the brother of the deceased lawyer.
Mohammadi has been imprisoned in Tehran's Evin prison since 2021 and was granted a three-week medical release in December 2024. She has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to more than 36 years in prison plus 154 lashes, according to her foundation. Iran has not publicly commented on her recent arrest, while Mohammadi's foundation is calling for her immediate release.
