Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi Arrested in Iran
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was arrested in Mashhad, Iran, according to her foundation and supporters. She had been on temporary leave from prison since December 2024 and had been jailed since November 2021 for campaigning against capital punishment and the obligatory hijab. The arrest occurred at a memorial ceremony for Khosrow Alikordi, who was found dead in his office last week. Sepideh Gholian was also arrested at the ceremony, as reported by Mohammadi’s foundation and her husband Taghi Rahmani in Paris. Iran has not issued an immediate comment on the detention. Supporters expressed concern that Mohammadi was at risk of being returned to prison. Weeks after the 2023 Oslo prize ceremony, a revolutionary court sentenced her to an additional 15 months for spreading propaganda against the state while in prison. Mehdi Mohammadi, her brother, attended the event and confirmed her arrest.
