Ongoing Ukraine Peace Talks in Florida Focus on Ending War and Supporting Recovery
On 21 December 2025, White House envoy Steve Witkoff announced that productive talks had taken place in Florida involving Ukrainian and European representatives aimed at ending the war. The discussions focused on stopping the killing, guaranteeing security, supporting Ukraine's recovery, and establishing a foundation for long-term stability and prosperity.
These talks form part of the Trump administration's prolonged efforts for peace amid the conflicting demands from Moscow and Kyiv. While Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev described the meetings as constructive, he noted there were no immediate updates on trilateral Ukraine-Russia-US negotiations. Similarly, Putin adviser Yuri Ushakov stated that trilateral talks were not currently being discussed nor prepared.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukraine's team in Florida was advancing quickly in cooperation with the American side. However, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets raised concerns about approximately 50 civilians being forcibly moved from the Sumy border area into Russia, urging their immediate return.
On the European front, France welcomed Putin’s willingness to engage with President Macron and expressed readiness to participate as mutual political will evolves. Meanwhile, EU leaders agreed to provide €90 billion ($106 billion) to Ukraine over the next two years through borrowing. However, an agreement on using frozen Russian assets has not been reached due to Belgium's position, causing delays in accessing these funds.
