Patrick Mahomes Faces Uncertain Recovery Timeline After ACL Tear
Patrick Mahomes tore his left ACL during the Kansas City Chiefs' narrow 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, with the injury confirmed just hours after the game.
He is set to receive a second opinion from Dr Dan Cooper before undergoing ACL surgery to determine the best course of action. Chiefs coach Andy Reid stated that Mahomes is currently in good spirits and will have the surgery when it is appropriate, noting that recovery times typically range from six to twelve months.
This injury news comes as the Chiefs will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014. In response to the setback, Gardner Minshew is expected to audition for the backup quarterback role heading into the next season, with Chris Oladokun also considered. No other quarterbacks have been signed for the upcoming season.
The injury to Mahomes coincided with another ACL tear suffered by Green Bay Packers pass rusher Micah Parsons, who posted a supportive message on social media.
Historically, players such as Joe Burrow have returned to play the following season after an ACL injury, while Daniel Jones was able to return by Week 1 after his ACL tear. The timeline for Mahomes' recovery remains uncertain as the Chiefs prepare for the upcoming season.
