Patrick Mahomes' knee injury is reportedly more severe than initially expected, marking an end to his season following surgery on Monday. The procedure, which took place in Dallas and was performed by Dr. Dan Cooper, aimed to repair a torn left ACL. However, NFL Network reports revealed an additional tear in the LCL, a detail not mentioned in the Chiefs' announcement that referenced torn ligaments generally.
Rehabilitation could last up to nine months. Although the involvement of the LCL may complicate recovery, it is not expected to extend the timeline beyond nine months. Despite this, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed confidence in Mahomes' rehabilitation process and stated he will not miss any time in the next season.
The Chiefs' playoff hopes ended after a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14, 2025, after which Gardner Minshew took over as the starting quarterback for the remaining games.
