Phil Mickelson Challenges Australian PM's Call for Tougher Gun Laws Following Bondi Beach Attack
Phil Mickelson responded on X to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's call for tougher gun laws after the Hanukkah terror attack at Bondi Beach.
Mickelson argued that the two attackers were not deterred by Australia's current strict gun laws and suggested the attack persisted due to a lack of armed resistance.
While not positioning himself as a strong gun advocate, Mickelson expressed skepticism about how similar policies could be implemented in the United States given its Constitution.
The attack at Bondi Beach resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to others. Authorities identified the shooters as a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son.
The attackers were reported to have improvised explosives and ISIS flags in their vehicle. During the confrontation, bystander Ahmed al Ahmed wrestled a gun away but sustained wounds.
The couple killed during the incident were identified as Boris and Sofia Gurman.
Australia's gun-control framework is based on the 1996 National Firearms Agreement, which bans most semi-automatic rifles and includes mandatory safety training, tests, and background checks.
