Prada will launch 2,000 limited-edition Kolhapuri-inspired sandals manufactured in Maharashtra and Karnataka under a new agreement with two state-backed entities. Each pair will be priced at about $939, with sales set for February 2026 online and in 40 Prada stores worldwide.

The agreement was signed during the Italy-India Business Forum 2025 and marks an initiative named Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals. It includes training for around 200 Kolhapuri artisans by Prada and Maharashtra's Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDCOM). These artisans will receive a three-year training program in Italy, with the state government providing financial assistance.

This five-year agreement, which may be extended, is designed to support the local leather industry and artisan training. Kolhapuri sandals, originating from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, have roots dating back to the 12th century and are traditional handcrafted leather footwear.

There was earlier backlash in June when Prada released sandals resembling Kolhapuri design without initially crediting the Indian roots. Prada later acknowledged the influence of Indian heritage in the sandals. Some local artisans expressed sadness over Prada's initial use of the design without due credit.
