Pro-Trump Clerk Convicted in 2020 Election Scheme Threatened and Attacked in Prison, Lawyer Says
Tina Peters, 70, the former Mesa County Clerk in Colorado, was convicted in a state case for participating in a scheme to breach Mesa County voting systems following the 2020 election. She is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence.
Her attorney, Peter Ticktin, has reported that Peters has been violently attacked by inmates on three occasions and has had her life threatened while incarcerated. These incidents were reported to the FBI and Department of Justice, leading to her transfer to a different unit.
Despite applying for placement in a safe housing unit six times, Peters has been denied such accommodations without a valid reason, according to her attorney.
Ticktin argues that former President Donald Trump has the constitutional authority to pardon Peters, despite her state convictions. Trump has expressed interest in her case. Peters is noted as the only Trump ally to face prison time related to the 2020 election denial and has received significant support from Trump.
Earlier this year, Peters filed a lawsuit seeking release on free speech grounds; however, Judge Scott Varholak rejected the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, has stated he will not pardon Peters and would refuse to participate in any pardon deal with Trump.
