Rep. Nancy Mace Pushes to Rename Black Lives Matter Plaza After Charlie Kirk
Rep. Nancy Mace introduced legislation aimed at renaming the area formerly known as Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, DC, to honor Charlie Kirk. Mace described Black Lives Matter as a terrorist organization and stated the renaming would pay tribute to Kirk and uphold the First Amendment.
Black Lives Matter Plaza was originally designated in June 2020 with a mural, but its designation was reversed in March 2025 amid Republican pressure regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion measures.
Charlie Kirk was assassinated during a college free-speech event in Utah, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the suspect, Tyler James Robinson. A House resolution honoring Kirk passed in September with support from Republicans and 95 Democrats, while 58 Democrats voted against it and 38 voted present.
Although Mace indicated her bill might not receive a House-wide vote, she vowed to "fight like hell" to advance it. The effort reflects a broader attempt to memorialize Kirk and defend free speech, sparking bipartisan reactions following his death.
