RNLI Issues Cold-Water Safety Warning Amidst Rescue Efforts on British Coast

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has issued warnings about the dangers of cold-water shock and hazardous weather conditions, particularly when entering sea water at temperatures of 15°C or below. Currently, sea temperatures around the UK and Ireland range between 6 and 10°C, presenting significant risks to swimmers.

These warnings follow a recent incident on Christmas Day near Budleigh Salterton, Devon, where two men disappeared after entering the water to assist a woman in difficulty. One of the men was identified as 63-year-old Matthew Upham, while the other man, in his 40s, remains unnamed. Several people involved in rescues were saved, with two treated by paramedics and one taken to hospital as a precaution.

Gareth Morrison, RNLI's head of water safety, urges swimmers to carefully assess their abilities and local sea conditions before swimming. He particularly recommends that first-time swimmers consult their GP before attempting open-water swimming.

Safety advice from the RNLI includes never swimming alone, considering group swims for increased safety, wearing wetsuits to maintain warmth and buoyancy, and using bright swim caps and tow floats to increase visibility and aid in emergencies. In the event that someone is in trouble, the RNLI stresses calling emergency services (999 or 112) and requesting the Coastguard’s assistance rather than entering the water oneself.

With sea temperatures expected to continue falling towards their coldest in March, the RNLI underscores the importance of taking cold-water risks seriously. Their clear guidance is: if in doubt, stay out of the water.
