Roman Abramovich Alleges Conspiracy Against Jersey Government Amid Ongoing Investigation
Jersey authorities launched a criminal investigation in 2022 into alleged corruption and money laundering associated with the origins of Roman Abramovich's wealth. Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Jersey froze over $7 billion of assets suspected to be linked to Abramovich. He remains a suspect in the ongoing inquiry.
Abramovich has claimed there is a conspiracy by the Jersey government against him and has sought to lift a gagging order related to the investigation. His legal team maintains that no charges have been filed in the approximately three and a half years since the investigation began and that the inquiry has made little progress. Earlier in 2025, he was permitted to file conspiracy claims.
In a significant development, a Swiss federal court ordered the release of banking records requested by the Jersey attorney general; this occurred around September 2025.
A judgment by Master of the Royal Court David Michael Cadin criticized the Government of Jersey’s data-handling practices as extreme and unreasonable and ordered the government to pay Abramovich’s legal costs.
The Jersey government has denied allegations of conspiracy, misfeasance in public office, or bad faith. It has pledged to defend its position robustly and underscored its commitment to open justice. The government has stated it will not comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing.
