Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 to Resume After Hiatus
The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is expected to resume on 30 December 2025, to be conducted intermittently over a period of 55 days. This renewed search effort will be led by Ocean Infinity, a UK/US marine robotics company, following an earlier search attempt this year that was paused in April due to bad weather.
The operation involves a seabed search covering about 5,800 square miles (15,000 square kilometers) under a no-find, no-fee contract, with Ocean Infinity receiving $70 million only if the wreckage is located. The exact search location has not been disclosed, but Malaysia's transport ministry stated it will target an area with the highest probability of locating the aircraft.
MH370 disappeared on 8 March 2014 during a Kuala Lumpur to Beijing flight carrying 239 people onboard: 12 Malaysian crew members and 227 passengers, mostly Chinese, including citizens from Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, India, France, the US, Iran, Ukraine, Canada, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Russia, and Taiwan. The multinational search effort was led by Australia along with Malaysia and China, covering more than 46,330 square miles of the southern Indian Ocean; this operation ended in January 2017. Ocean Infinity previously conducted a three-month search in 2018 without success.
Malaysia’s 2018 official investigation concluded that the plane was manually turned around midair and could not rule out unlawful interference. Causes such as autopilot malfunction, suicide mission, and mechanical failure were ruled out. Relatives of those onboard have urged for answers; among them, Danica Weeks expressed hope that this search phase will bring closure.
